Dhanteras is more than a festival associated with the purchase of gold and silver. Rooted in the legend of Samudra Manthan, it celebrates the interconnected blessings of health, longevity and prosperity, symbolised by Shiva, Vishnu, Dhanvantari, Lakshmi and Yama.

Samudra Manthan: From Poison to Immortality

According to the Puranas, the Devas and Asuras churned the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality. Vishnu assumed his Kurma (tortoise) incarnation to support Mount Mandara, which served as the churning rod.

The churning released the deadly Halahala poison, which Shiva consumed to save creation, earning him the name Neelkantha (the blue-throated one).

Goddess Lakshmi subsequently emerged, representing wealth, fortune and abundance, and chose Vishnu as her consort. Finally, Dhanvantari appeared carrying the Amrita Kalasha (pot of nectar).

Shiva protected creation, Lakshmi bestowed prosperity, and Dhanvantari brought the nectar of life.

Dhanvantari, Lakshmi and Yama

Dhanvantari, revered as an aspect of Vishnu and the divine patron of Ayurveda, is worshipped on Dhanteras for health and longevity.

His message is captured in Arogyam Paramam Bhagyam, meaning that good health is the greatest fortune.

Lakshmi-Kubera worship symbolises prosperity, while Yama Deepam, the traditional lamp lit facing south, is an expression of the prayer for protection against untimely death.

Together, they represent Arogya (health), Ayushya (longevity) and Aishwarya (prosperity).

Dhanteras 2026

This year, Dhanteras falls on Friday, November 6, 2026. Friday is ruled by Venus (Shukra), traditionally associated with wealth, beauty, luxury and Goddess Lakshmi.

Interestingly, Shukracharya possessed Mrita Sanjivani Vidya, the knowledge associated with restoring life, while Dhanvantari brought Amrita. Both mythological traditions thus evoke the themes of rejuvenation and the triumph over mortality.

Astrologically, Venus is retrograde and returns to Virgo, its sign of debilitation, on November 6. This placement is traditionally interpreted as a reminder of the need for financial prudence and moderation.

Meanwhile, Jupiter and Ketu are positioned in Magha Nakshatra in Leo, associated with ancestors, Dharma and spiritual detachment. Their conjunction is traditionally interpreted as highlighting the importance of balancing material prosperity with wisdom. These are traditional astrological interpretations, not guaranteed predictions.

The Eternal Message

Dhanteras falls on Krishna Trayodashi, and its Pradosh worship also recalls Shiva’s role in protecting creation.

The festival embodies a profound philosophy: Shiva represents protection, Dhanvantari health, Lakshmi prosperity and Yama an awareness of mortality.

True wealth is not merely what we accumulate, but the health to enjoy it, the wisdom to preserve it and the generosity to share it.

Dhanteras celebrates wealth with health, prosperity with wisdom and life guided by Dharma.
